| THE TAKE
FILM SCREENING WITH THE DIRECTOR AVI LEWIS
OCCUPY. RESIST. PRODUCE.
VISIT: www.thetake.org
On
the 14th and 15th of July,
hundreds of people attended preview screenings - presented by the SSF
and APHEDA-Union Aid Abroad - of the brilliant documentary THE
TAKE, about workers' resistance to globalisation in Argentina
as they reclaim their work, their dignity and their democracy. Director
Avi Lewis took questions from the audience and inspired
us to see a common struggle against neoliberalism, particularly as we
face down the Howard government's plans for breaking the power of unions
and our right to collectively bargain in our workplaces.
INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL A
GREAT SUCCESS

Over 200 people attended the Media That Matters short film festival
on 7 June. Sponsored
by New-York based Media Rights and the SSF, 16 short films by local
and international film makers were shown covering a wide variety of
issues including culture-jamming, sustainable agriculture, civil liberties
and more. Another fantastic lead-in event to the 2005
forum.
WSF FOUNDING FIGURE CHICO WHITAKER IN
SYDNEY
On 16
May the SSF hosted a World Debt
Day Forum with World Social Forum founding figure Chico Whitaker, a
great event which helped raise the profile of the WSF and help build
momentum for the 2005 SSF.
DEBATES
IN THE WSF: WHERE IS THE WSF HEADING?
The last World
Social Forum at Porto Alegre, Brazil, from 26-31
January 2005 was huge, but also provoked intense debate
about the direction of the event, and the next steps. In particular,
a document produced by 19 prominent intellectuals - "The Porto
Alegre Manifesto" - caused a stir. Below are some links to current
debates:
• Group
of 19: The "Porto Alegre Manifesto"
• Foltz
et al: Future of the WSF Process
• Bello:
Less Euphoric WSF Returns to Brazil
• Osava:
Risks Posed by Success
